Day 1
August 4th, 2000

I was all packed up and ready to hit the road.  The plan was to meet up with Rob in Sturbridge, MA, and then then follow Mark Holbrook's RCR IX route.  The morning started out a bit overcast, but it soon cleared and was a nice sunny day.
The XX, all packed up and ready to hit the road! I had planned on getting a early start, but one thing lead to another and I finally got onto the road by about 9am.  I arrived in Sturbridge around 10am to find Rob waiting.  He had been there since 8:30am.  Oops.
We gassed up and got ready to hit the road.
We followed Mark's RCR route, but found a few, little mistakes:
- On Mark's route sheet, he says to get off the Mass Pike at exit 8, should be exit 3.
- We missed the whole NY Rt. 11A section.  For future reference, it is right before the Taconic Parkway.  We ended up just staying on Rt. 23, and picked up the route sheet from there.

From there, we just followed the route all the way to Worlds End State Park. When we got there, we looked for Tom, who was supposed to meet us there, but was no where to bee seen.  We went to see if he had checked in, only to find that the camping was full.  Shit.  We got a list of other local campgrounds and then called Tom.  Turns out that Tom was not going to be able to meet us that night, and would instead catch up with us the next morning.  So, Rob and I decided on Pioneer Campground from the list, and made our way over there.

We picked out a nice quite, grassy site, and set up our tents.
My new Khayam tent! I got the Traveler.
We met a nice guy who was camping in the mini van with the family. He was also a rider and we could tell from how he was talking to us, he would have much rather dumped the family, and headed out with us.  Who could blame him!   :-)

On the way to the campsite, I had recognized where I was from the trip I had taken through there with a bunch of other Denizens on the way to RCR VII a few years earlier, and remembered a nice little diner where we had had breakfast, so Rob and I headed over there for some dinner.

After dinner, I took a quick trip into town to get some saline solution, which I had carefully forgot to pack.  I sort of was looking forward to the little trip, since it would give me a chance to check out my new 100W high beam and 70W low beam I had just installed.  Holy daytime, Batman.  The lights rocked.  But my joy was short-lived.  Only about 5 minutes into my ride, the high beam got really, really bright, then went out.  Once I got into town, I discovered that the bulb had exploded. Whoa.  I rode back with just the low beam.  :-(

When I got back to the campsite, I found Rob doing his best to get a fire going. he was meeting with some success, but the wet wood just didn't want to catch.  We eventually got the fire going, and spent the rest of the evening drinking a few beers, hanging out around the fire, and checking out the stunning display of stars.
We finally called it a day and crawled into out tents for a great nights sleep. Somehow, Mark's 320 mile route turned into 660 miles.  Not quite sure how that happened.

Total milage: 684 miles
