Frequently Asked Questions/Readme/Help Q: How do I add a web site to the database? Q: I went to a link/called a company, but I got an error/wrong number. Q: I went to a link, but the site had a note that it moved to a different server, and the old site told me to update my bookmarks. A: Uh oh -- the database needs to be updated! Please send email to the archivist (clarity.net@adam) with the relevant info and he'll update the listings. Please take the time to track down the new/updated information if possible. The archivist does not have time to stay current with almost 400 addresses. Q: I sent mail asking to have a site listed, but I never got a reply, and my site/company/info never showed up in the database. What gives? Q: I sent mail informing the archivist of my cool new site, but he declined to list it. No fair! A: The archivist could be out of town or busy, but it's also possible that he decided not to include the information you provided in his database. Information contained in this private database is maintained at the sole discretion of the archivist; if he decides to include or exclude a particular record, that is his prerogative. Furthermore, while information in this database is generally believed to be correct, the archivist makes no guarantees of its accuracy. Q: Some database entries generate the same output regardless of whether I selected "prefer URL" or "prefer Details." What gives? Q: I selected "prefer URL" but got an address instead. Why? A: Probably because the database doesn't contain both a URL and "details" information for that record. If only one type of information (URL or details/address) exists for that record, it will be shown no matter which option you select. Q: When I do a search, I don't get back any matches. A: Try searching for more generic/less specific things -- the search engine is pretty stupid. Instead of searching for parts and accessories, try searching for parts. Instead of searching for harley davidson, try searching for harley. There is no search language, no logical operators like AND or OR. Just type a generic word or two, and click search. That's all. Q: Sometimes, when I go "back" to a previous search, or when I "reload" the resources page, my browser asks me if I want to "repost form data". What's that all about? A: The SFBA Motorcycle Resources page works from a database, dynamically generating the web pages you see from search results. With no search, there are no results to display -- so any time you are looking at resources on the SFBAMR site, you are looking at the results to a query. When your browser asks you if it should "repost form data", it just wants to know if it's OK to re-do that search. That's OK -- it is. Q: I went to a site that was listed in the database and there was content that I found objectionable. Q: My child has been scarred for life after visiting a site that was listed in this database. A: This is merely a database of motorcycle resources. The responsibility for preventing tender eyes from seeing objectionable content lies with the individual listed sites and minors' parents/guardians. Yes, there's objectionable content out there somewhere. That's life. I don't control it. Q: Will this database ever be available in other forms? Connecting up to the web every time I need to look something up is annoying. A: Yes, if you're a PalmPilot user. (If you're a WindowsCE user ... what were you thinking???) Unfortunately, we haven't tested the method that might result in automatic -- which is to say "reasonably up-to-date" -- dumps of the database, so the .pdb file we generated might be way out of date. Oh, and you'll need MobileDB to be able to read it. (Which costs money, but there's a free read-only version.) Q: How do I get back to the SFBA Motorcycle Resources database from this FAQ? A: Use your browser's back button. Q: The user interface sucks. A: Bite me. |
